Cellframe — Web 3.0 Done Right

If you have had more than a few months exposure to the cryptocurrency and blockchain world, you’ve likely heard the term “Web 3.0” mentioned at least once. Although there is some ambiguity to this term, a simple way of explaining it is that it is an upscaling of our current internet service model on a global scale, to an improved model that uses blockchain as a foundation for its use. This is in contrast to the initial “Web 1.0” model where internet services were still building a foundation, to our “Web 2.0” today in the age of online consumerism and social media.
Blockchain has certain future-proof and global scale advantages that make it a perfect fit for a Web 3.0 system, such as the magic word “decentralisation”, immutable functionality and process, and efficiency. As a result, a blockchain based internet service system is an attractive prospect.
This leads us nicely into Cellframe which may have unlocked a reasonable and scalable approach to service oriented blockchain systems.
Cellframe: An Overview
Cellframe is a project and platform designed to build quantum-safe blockchain services that can be used every day in regard to online services. Every activity online today requires some sort of security and infrastructure for even the smallest of actions. Cellframe is able to accomplish certain things like blockchain interoperability, VPN and Content Delivery Networks, second layer solutions, and edge computing. This allows for Cellframe to potentially be used in a number of front facing sectors such as security for departments and local government agencies, notatries and licenses, and platforms that can be used for training programs.
One of the key ways that Cellframe is able to manage this is by creating services for people to use in an outward manner, which are decentralised and then stored ‘on-chain’. Many blockchain projects and platforms are already trying to accomplish this, but are doing so in an unscalable way. These other “competitor” chains are often unproductive due to their using of an oracle-based system (which in most cases is just a set of nodes) and then deploying them to call on data and bring it on to the blockchain. The trouble with this is that too much unnecessary data is being placed on-chain, which can result in a large bottleneck of traffic where the most important information gets clogged up or even left behind. The model that Cellframe uses allows for an off-chain modelling system to gain the information that is needed, verify it, then send it on-chain. This is done by taking the computer and operating system of the user and utilising the host’s machine’s power and bandwidth, essentially making the host machine a minor node.
This creates a shed load more efficiency at a near-zero extra cost whilst offering the same overall security.
The Cellframe Services Framework
Cellframe has a very robust and impressive framework that utilises the services needed to function on the blockchain. Alongside PQ encryption and quantum key potential in its roadmap, there are a handful of impressive elements to their framework that users can implement into their own service:
- Interoperability: Cellframe allows for users to have interoperability between blockchains by using what they call “Cell Bridges”. These bridges will allow data to be sent and called from the different chains which helps create an opportunity for future expansion in the overall ecosystem.
- VPN/CDN Connectivity: traditional VPNs take a different approach, but with Cellframe, the framework is used to create a decentralised bandwidth sharing economy. In this model, the nodes used for this connectivity depend upon the nodes around the user in particular. This helps create the fastest route for the VPN/CDN, not necessarily the closest.
- Open Source Blockchain Frameworks: the implementation for this framework is completely open source, which is made possible by launching custom sub-chains for users to take advantage of.
- Mirror Chains: Cellframe has also introduced the ability to have similar chains working alongside the framework, allowing for extra protection in the event of an attack and for restoration in case an attack does occur.
- Second Layer Solutions: in addition to being used as a service on its own, Cellframe can also be used as a second layer solution for a blockchain that is already set in place, including Ethereum. This solution can also be used as a side chain as well.
- Audio/Video Streaming: the framework for the Cellframe network is also encrypted well enough to use audio and video services through the framework itself, maximising its effect on various media types.
- Edge Computing: The Cellframe network isn’t just working for internet services from the browser or desktop, but can also be used for so-called “edge computing” services that are used on smartphones, tablets, and other personal devices. This is done by a process called fog commuting where Cellframe can isolate the demand on the network for a certain area where smartphones are in the closest location to each other.
The Roadmap to Blockchain Service Networks
The Cellframe network is ripe with opportunity to harness the power of blockchain for services that we use in everyday life. The team behind Cellframe has created a roadmap of everything they plan to accomplish in the next 12 months. Here’s a brief overview of what that looks:
- Testnet (Version 2.0): by the end of September, Cellframe is expected to upgrade its alpha testnet into a beta testnet, or Version 2.0 which will allow more features to be tested and run for accuracy and efficiency.
- Bridge With Ethereum: by November, Cellframe is expected to equip their testnet capabilities to have a bridge compatible with the Ethereum network, creating the first steps to interoperability.
- Dual Mainnet Launch: by the end of 2021, Cellframe plans to have not just their mainnet running but also the bridge mainnet to Ethereum as well.
- Cellframe Dashboard: the year 2022 is expected to have a great start for them as they introduce the Cellframe dashboard, giving a GUI to the network.
- WASM based smart contracts: Around May 2022, Cellframe is expected to expand their framework to implement smart contracts.
- Dedicated Storage Services: And by the conclusion of August 2022, Cellframe plans to have a full storage service solution for its users.
In my opinion and as the main catalyst for my own personal investment, Cellframe has great potential as a provider for blockchain based internet services. This provision of services as has been a niche of the blockchain space ripe with difficulty for adoption. The main component of Cellframe that stands out for me is their ability to pass down the retrieval of data to a local hosting machine instead of oracles or placing all the data on-chain.
The Web 3.0 world is in need of something like Cellframe to help future proof networks with interoperability features and to create a framework for users to do business on. We will see in the coming years how this will affect not just the nature of our involvement on the blockchain, but also the things we do with the tools provided.
